Reports are suggesting Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton is unlikely to join Everton after the Toffees balked at the 28-year old’s wage demands.

Barton, a boyhood Evertonian, is available on a free transfer having been placed on the transfer-list by Newcastle earlier this week.

Everton are one of a number of clubs interested in the central midfielder, with Tottenham, Arsenal and other European clubs said to be in the hunt for his signature.

And despite being available on a free transfer, it looks like once again Everton will miss out on a ‘free’ transfer target because they are unable to meet his wage demands.
