Everton ordered to pay £1 million for Garbutt
By Ian Phillips • Sep 7th, 2009 • Category: News |Everton have been ordered to pay a £1 million transfer fee for former Leeds academy player, Luke Garbutt. The initial fee paid to Leeds will be £500,000, though this will rise to £1 million after add ons and appearance clauses. Garbutt, a defender, is a hot prospect and Leeds were very reluctant to see him go. Ken Bates had wanted Everton “punished like Chelsea” for “stealing” Garbutt, referring to FIFA’s decision to ban Chelsea from registering new player until 2011 for inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens. Everton were believed to have wanted to pay Leeds around £200,000 however in the light of what’s happened to Chelsea, the extra £800,000 won’t be a major concern. The timing of the tribunal is unlucky, as recent events have probably increased the fee.
