Don’t Expect A Windfall

Now that the £22million sale of Lescott has finally gone through, there are discussions of how much Moyes will get, who we’ll sign and people wondering if we’re going to make big money signings.  Unfortunately that’s unlikely to happen.

With the fee reportedly at around £22million, 10% of the profit, around £1.7million, will be going to Wolves as part of the original deal to sign him.  On top of that the Premierleague get 5% of the deal and 15% will go in taxes, so out of the £22million, Everton will receive somewhere in the region of £15.9million and an extra 47k/week off our wage bill.

Unfortunately whilst Lescott may only have been our second best centre back, he was also our cover for left back, which means Lescott will most likely need to be replaced by two players.  At current inflated prices, Moyes will be lucky to get a left back and a centre back of similar quality and age in for under £10million, with Distin, Senderos, Huth and Shawcross being just a few of the many names linked as replacements, meaning that the actual boost to our transfer budget to be spent on other players is only going to be about £6million, maybe enough to get one good quality player.

With our defence depleted and time against us, Moyes will have to work quick to spend this money and put yet another poorly managed summer behind us by start to concentrate on pushing us up the league and making the most of our chance to do well in Europe.
