By Unclassified • May 28th, 2009 • Category: News |1906 – Everton vs Newcastle United
Having knocked out Liverpool 2-0 in the semi final, Everton went down to Crystal Palace for our 3rd FA Cup final, and our first successful one. A 77th minute goal from Sandy Young saw the famous old cup come back to Merseyside for the first time.
1933 – Everton vs Manchester City
A game of firsts. It was Everton’s first trip to Wembley, it was the first time numbers were worn on shirts, and it was the first and last time Everton legends Ted Sagar and Dixie Dean appeared in the FA Cup Final for Everton. It also rounded off an unusual treble of the second division title 1931, the first division league title 1932 and FA Cup 1933. Everton hammered Manchester City 3-0 in front of 92,950, one from Stein and two from Dixie Dean.
1966 – Everton vs Sheffield Wednesday
Arguably the greatest FA Cup Final come back of all time. Everton went into this game as favourites but an early goal from McCalliog and a second from Ford on 57 minutes seemed to have handed Sheffield Wednesday the Cup. However Catterick’s men were not out of it yet, and unlikely hero Trebilcock scored two in 5 minutes to bring the score back to 2-2 and on the 74th Temple got the winner. It was the last time in the final to date a team had come from two down to win the match.
1984 – Everton vs Watford
It had been 14 long years since Everton had last won some silverware, and having already had an unsuccessful final in the Milk Cup against Liverpool that year, Everton went to Wembley as firm favourites, cemented by Watford manager Graham Taylor’s quote “We’re going to Wembley to enjoy the day” to which Kendall replied “The only way to enjoy a day out at Wembley is by winning”.
Everton delivered and goals from Sharp and Gray saw Everton take the trophy back to Goodison, the start of a glorious era in Everton’s history as 3 more FA Cup finals, 2 league titles, 1 ECWC and 4 charity shields followed in the next five years.
1995 – Everton vs Manchester United
Having blasted Spurs out the way at Elland Road in the semis, the Dogs Of War went into the final against Manchester United as huge underdogs. Having only just avoided relegation the season earlier and only just secured safety two weeks before the final, Everton weren’t given much chance by the wider media. However under the guidance of Royle Everton ripped up the script and fought to win 1-0 to bring some light to an otherwise very dark decade for the club.
2009? – Everton vs Chelsea
I’ve already booked off the weekend for the Charity Shield so we’d better do it!
