Well according to the IFFHS we are…
According to IFFHS, who since 1991 have devised a ranking system to determine which clubs have performed best, Everton have been ranked 24th best team in the world in 2008, 16 places above Real Madrid, and 341 places above Dundee United (just in case you wanted to know).
IFFHS give points to teams based on their performances in their domestic leagues and continental competitions, with the amounts of points varying depending on the strength of the competition, such as 14 points for a win in the Champions League compared to 12 in the UEFA Cup. Domestic cup competitions are no longer included, so our Carling Cup run doesn’t help boost our score, nor does the fact that we purposely decided (painful memories coming back) to give the FA Cup a miss this year go against us.
This makes 2008 the best season to be an Evertonian since 1995, when domestic cups were included, when we were ranked joint 15th with Barcelona. And with some of the best football on offer at Goodison in decades, two thrilling cup runs and a strong league campaign, I can’t really argue with it, let’s just make next season better than 1995 and bring home some silverware.
And for those of you who are interested, below is a table of the English teams in the overall top 200 since records began in 1991, Everton are ranked 110th. Take your time looking at it, as it will be the last time you see Leeds above Everton in a league table.
