Silly season set to start

The mayhem will (well might if we’re lucky) finally commence tomorrow as the transfer window opens. There hasn’t been much movement from many clubs so far which is mainly due to the fact that Euro 2008 has been on. However, the tournament is now over with Spain deservedly crowned champions of Europe after beating Germany 1-0.

Everton have been linked with a host of names this summer including Manuel Fernandes, Marek Suchý, Orlando Engelaar, Andrei Arshavin, David Bentley, Joe Mattock and Michael Johnson to name a few.

Everton have one of the smallest squads in the Premiership so they will need to bring in plenty of quantity and quality to help them fight for all four trophies this year.

These next two months will give a clear indication on the players David Moyes will want to bring into the club. Also this transfer window will once and for all show whether Everton have sufficient transfer funds. There has been much speculation that Moyes will have to sell big name players like Andrew Johnson to bring in much needed cash to the club.

Everton have broken their transfer record for the last two years in a row and they will need to do it again this year if they have any chance of breaking into the top four to qualify for Champions League football.

In the past Moyes has tried to bring in the players he has wanted in early so they could have enough time to adapt and integrate with the rest of the squad. However, it doesn’t seem likely this year as Everton go back into pre-season training on the 3rd July. They then fly out a few days later to a training camp in Switzerland.

This year’s summer transfer window will be a defining moment in showing whether Everton will be pursuing Champions League football this year or just stablilsing themselves as a top six club.
