No you haven’t walked into a Mark Clattenberg wet dream, I’m referring to the new £900million development in the centre of our city.

So the initial opening of our new centre of shopping has taken place, as the rejuvenation of Liverpool continues with the building of Liverpool One, except there is one notable absence, one of Liverpool’s longest established institutions hasn’t been invited to the party, Everton.

Here we are, in Liverpool, the European Capital of Culture, home of world heritage buildings, The Beatles, the most museums and galleries outside of London, Aintree racecourse, and two of England’s greatest footballing institutions, or so I thought.

A visitor to Liverpool would be forgiven if they didn’t realise that Liverpool was the home of two very big clubs, each with very illustrious histories, as only one has any notable presence within our great city.

This year, 2008, is the year our city aimed to put itself back on the world map as a vibrant rejuvenating city. However this new incarnation of our city seems to have been built with the exception of our great club.
Liverpool 08, the culture company, the company which has been given a year to sing the praises of everything that is good about Liverpool, have put football on their agenda. Most visitors to Liverpool08.com will find a photo of Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool captain, on the front page, followed by a quote of how he loves the city, but no matter how many times you refresh the page, in the list of notable scousers whose quotes will appear, none of those have any connection to Everton. In fact, had it not been for Everton FC shareholders, who put on ‘The Dixie Dean Story’ at Crosby Civic Hall, Everton wouldn’t even have had a mention in what is supposed to be the dawn of a new era for Liverpool. Unfortunately the absence of Everton FC doesn’t stop with this one company.

Walk around Liverpool and you’ll see a fleet of buses painted in Liverpool FC red, with Liverpool legends of old gracing the sides. Above Lime Street, on a 100ft banner, the Liverpool squad look down over city, and as you walk into the new shopping district, you are met by the new Liverpool FC Superstore. The Mersey may flow Royal Blue, but the town is very definitely painted red.

Liverpool One boasts a catchment area of 4.7million, out of whom each spend more per head on average on clothing than in any other city. Yet Everton are confined to a corner of JJB, which resides under the shadow of a derelict St Johns. If we are to restore ourselves as the ‘People’s Club’ of Merseyside, this must change.

Letters are currently circulating amongst minor shareholders to call for an EGM, in order to question the board about many important issues surrounding the stadium, but I think they should look at the broader picture. Everton were once pioneers in football both on and off the pitch, and now, at a time when clubs are throwing themselves at the big money from foreign investors, I believe Everton should do what they do best, be innovators, not followers. Personally I believe the minor shareholders, and fans alike, should take the opportunity of an EGM to call for the formation of a fans pressure group, not a protest group which we currently have,

whose aim is to protest over a single issue, but a group who will ensure, under scrutiny and pressure from the fans, that the board is pulling the club in the right direction. A share issue could be called for to allow a new group of fans to not only buy into the club providing a short term cash boost, but also to give a larger group of fans the chance to have a greater say in the club’s future. The fans should be given the chance to elect a representative onto the Everton board to ensure our interests are being looked after, and that the elite of our club does not become a closed shop

Now is a vital time for Everton Football Club, with our greatest chance in decades to break into the elite again being just a few rungs of the ladder away, with the fate of our new stadium hanging in the balance, and most important of all with the city of Liverpool attempting to rebuild itself without Everton. The next few years will decide the future of Everton, and I believe we the fans should be given a voice and influence in the shaping of the club. We are not just loyal customers to a business, we are the life and soul of a great institution, and we should take the opportunity of an EGM to give us a permanent voice is the shaping of our great club’s future.

  1. its because everton are a nothing club. they are small. they are on a downward spiral.

of course there is no relevance in mentioning them

  2. I agree with the comment above. The capital of culture is a celebration of everything is great about the city of Liverpool. So they would obviously focus Liverpool FC as the most successful club in Europe and ignore the club who have achieved nothing.

  3. you lot have lived in dreamland for years. EVERYONE KNOWS LIVERPOOL ARE THE ONLY CLUB ON MERSEYSIDE. like your fans your team is second rate. and you have never been the people,s team walk around l,pool pal and count how many kids wear blue. f..k all the city is liverpool not everton, we are the cream your not. you lot must be use to being crap on merseyside because you allways have been..

  4. How was all of this allowed to happen, and did Everton and the City authorities not enter into any discussions concerning advertsing the two teams. With ref to Llfc4life, typical attitude of r/s supporter. Can’t see the bigger picture of the benefits to having 2 clubs in the city. As regards a nothing club, well there are 15 other PL teams last year that would have liked to have been in the same position as this ‘nothing club’, so obvioulsy the other 15 are less than nothing clubs. And don’t forget, without clubs to challenge in the domestic league, the PL would end up like the SPL with only two clubs in it…and that would not be the R/S. So be thankful that we get 4 PL positions, coz without that extra funding you would have sunk a long time ago with the Souness era and Benitez spending all the kitty. If you didn’t have rich benefactors to buy the likes of Torres you would have sunk without trace…

  5. Ah, you have to love the intelligence of the average kopite. How they come up with the shite they say is beyond me. Maybe if they genuinely believed they are at the same level of the top 3 they would’nt be so threatened by us. 🙄

  6. Well written article but aparantly everton will have a shop in liverpool 1, its just not open yet

  7. Another Gobshite red. Obviously in the closet about supporting Everton. What’s up, tosspot? Find it hard to be different from the pack down there in Cornwall, you ginger, six-toed, banjo playing twat!

  8. Are you still in Liverpool? I’d have thought Tesco’s would have built you a stadium in a Superstore car park by now.

  9. You don’t have to say it in such a way, LFC4life, but go anywhere on this planet and mention Liverpool FC and you’ll find out that people have heard about that particular football club. Mention Everton FC and they will give you a rather puzzled look. I might be on of very few who don’t have too much against Everton, but you blue guys should take it like men that outside the UK you are not popular at all, mind known. Good luck for the future anyway and no, you don’t seem to be on a downward spiral! Hope that you lot and us make the top two of England in the not too far future again (to put it more precisely, it’s us Reds winning the league and you Blues finishing second what I’d like to see).

  10. everton are worthless! smattering the town with images of EFC would do nothing for the city.

    YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE

  11. Maybe Everton should consider moving out of the city which they no longer belong. I believe the minority of football fans in Liverpool will agree that their beloved club should leave for a better location. Believe me, the situation will get worse for Everton. the young generation are slowly realising that Liverpool FC is THE Liverpool club and the nothingness of recent Everton history will only make their position worse. Go on, Kirkby’s waiting.

  12. LFC4life, if in your words Everton are a nothing club, why are you on an Everton site thats called follow Everton? You know quite well that Everon aren’t a small club, even an ardent Kopite would admit that, and if you knew your history you would of course realise the only reason Liverpool exsist is because of Everton, but I’m sure you knew that!

You don’t wind us up, in fact its quite flattering to know that your on an Everton website, I would never dream of clicking on a Liverpool website because I really couldn’t care less on what your club is doing. You should come down to Goodison one day, its really weird, the guy sat next to you will actually have a scouse accent, and have come in a car to the match and not a plane.

  13. Bit Harsh but thats how it is these days it seems..i am an LFC supporter and i find it pretty crass that Everton FC have not been invited to the party.Half my family are blue and even though the banter runs deep, when it comes to shove there is no seperating Everton and Liverpool people. My cousin who used to follow the blues everywhere and was at Rotterdam in those glory years phoned me when we won the Euro cup in 2005, he said to be honest mate when that third goal went in i was jumpin up and down and screamin at the telly made up for yers. A victory for LIVERPOOL THE CITY. There has been a downturn in the support for each other since the day we were singing for the pride of merseyside at THAT Fa cup final, it didn’t even matter who won that day, because we were ALL winners. NOONE in football has that camarderie and it something to be proud of…It doesn’t help when Benitez is belittling Everton or David Moores is throwing the shit back. NEITHER of these two are scousers. The day Everton and Liverpool FC can stand beside each other and be proud of EACH OTHERS achievements will be a very fine day for LIVERPOOL THE CITY.

  14. great argument there pal.

  15. i forgot to mention, here in norway the boys must learn to suck at an early age. i love my club, only thing is, they are 1400miles away in liverpool. when i arrive in your town, i will buy many things at the shiny club shop, so much so i wont be able to carry my ski’s.

dont mess with us, the bergen massive. kop stylee. gay fans unite. rainbows of the world.

  16. As a red I have to agree. Everton have once again missed the boat. I think the only real involvement from a visible perspective was the derby where Gerrard and Beatty (?) wore 08 on their shirts and that became more memorable for Gerrard’s sending off.

Liverpool FC because of the name will always be associated with the city – I find that wherever I travel. Those of us raised Liverpool in before the Sky generation will always remember the rivalry but I think the lack of presence of Everton within the Liverpool ’08 celebrations is another sign of the gulf between the two clubs right now and how they are perceived outside the city in marketing terms.

Istanbul did no harm at all to the profile of Liverpool (club and city), Athens maybe did but both of these events and any footballing ‘triumphs’ this millennia have come from the red half of Merseyside. Had we been capital of culture in ’88 I am sure the story would be different.

Where does the blame lie though? With the stakeholders of Liverpool 08 or with Everton FC?

  17. LFC4life lets be resonable we must respect everton as without them there would be no us. Even diamonds come from th dirt!! Everton are a big club, were just bigger. They pipped us to the champions league spot in 2005 and done f*** all – straight back into the uefa cup (we had to go through three rounds). Liverpool is soon to become a one club town. F*** off to Kirkby and take tescos with ya!

  18. LFC4life how original are you??? You can’t be a scouser for two reasons, 1. you actually support LFC 2. You are soooo not funny.

Even if you live in Liverpool my bet is that your dad was a docker working long hours and ya mar took in lodgers from Norway (if you know what I mean).

This whole thing is a fiasco, Everton FC’s marketing department may as well not exist… Get a grip EFC I am sick of seeing those red shite ugly fuckers looking at me and scaring my kids…

  19. Some very good debate. Nice to see some sensible comments from some Liverpool fans.

  20. I think you will find the blue to red ratio on shirts in Liverpool is probably very near 2:1 for the blues… You red guys are gonna need all the revenue you can get from this publicity when your owners put you into receivership…

0.01p shares in LFC anyone???? I just might buy 2

  21. Everton are falling miserably behind in the merchandising stakes, just as we feel behind ManUtd in the 90’s. It has taken us 10 to 15 years to improve in this area and hopefully we will reap the rewards over the next few years. To be honest, I think both clubs have been badly managed in various ways since the glorious 80’s, although Everton more badly than us.

  22. The red to blue ratio is about 3:1 Liverpool to Everton, walk through town on a Saturday afternoon and clear for all to see. That is the reason Everton can still sell season tickets at Christmas while there is a 10 year wait at Liverpool.

  23. I am a Red, and of course Everton should have a shop in the new development.

I ignore the ignorance of some of my fellow Reds, and have to say, in all honesty.

Although Liverpool are a bigger club than the Blues, it should never be forgotten that Everton themselves are a MASSIVE club, and the city should be proud to promote both our teams.

    MERSEYPRIDE!

  24. Clusy, I don’t know where you are getting your stats (other than cloud cuckoo land), you obviously see what you want to see. If your shirt ratio was so high, why would Everton be so far behind in marketing terms and why would JJB still be handling your ‘club shops’? If the brand was solid enough you wouldn’t need JJB as a crutch.

Also, there are others in the background should the yanks really screw us over. Even at bargain basement prices that’s not been the case for Everton in a long while. I don’t think that attempting to sling mud whilst talking of shirt sales or debt is your smartest move, remember the King’s Dock?

  25. As I understand it Everton will be opening their own shop in L1 shortly.
However, EFC comes a poor second in the battle for the plastic bag carrying Japanese tourist market 😕 Personally I couldn’t give a flying feck – the profit they make from the RS superstore won’t make even a small dent in their new Yankee inspired debt repayments of £31m a year in interest, though.

If they call having 5,000 Norwegians on their season ticket waiting list success – they can fucking keep it.

Reclaim the Kop – eh lads 😆

  26. your english is jolly good for norweigians. enjoy your reindeer an chips

  27. Toblerone Boots what is your source?

  28. Simon T, that’s the spirit lad. Keep the status quo and you’ll go even further down the pan. Odd that you should choose ‘japanese’ tourists as an issue for Liverpool when your summer spending is funded by a Chinese Beer and you are taking part in a talent show for your next big saviour on Chinese TV. Can you say hypocrite?

  29. Good article. Shame it was spoilt by a few idiotic comments. I have heard that we are opening a shop in Liverpool1 and so we should, but, it should have been ready and open by now.

  30. As a red, I agree that the blue team in the city have been shunned. But when Liverpool1 opened, they wanted a return on the heavy costs and In all honesty, Liverpool are a more attractive option for selling merchandise etc. But its only a matter of time before a blues store opens. The problem is whether it will stay open. The last store had to close due to overriding costs.
I know Everton have their fun with the ppl’s club motto, but the truth is that there are more Liverpool fans in the city and we are able to build profits through selling goods.

Why don’t you blues embrace Kirkby? The primary benefits are being ignored and I am surprised at the resistance to the move. Deep down, I think its about the pride of being in the city – if you lost that then you would be a lost club.

  31. Like a fellow Blue said earlier to the red gobshites………what are you doin on an Everton website….tits.
I totally agreee with the debate about our marketing skills…..its crap and the ones who run the club must know it.
Gobshites….go to town on a saturday and you will see the city full of Irish all with there kits and scarves and badges and hats on,hotels fully booked.Thats why there is a so called 10 yr waitin list for season tickets. While the minority of red scousers go to their locals with thier kits on watchin the Liverpool channel….ooops sorry the arabic,oh it is Liverpool….
One more title for the mancs and they have caught them up.
Gareth Barry £15mill final piece of the jigsaw AGAIN build up the debt agent Hicks and Gillett

  32. when will you blue losers learn? You are nothing and I mean nothing. Everyone knows the city of Liverpool by the great Liverpool Football Club and the Beatles and NOT everton, trust me THAT’S A FACT!!!!!!! You were, you are and you will always be a small club, so just keep your mouth shut and take pride for being in the same city as the most successful club in England.

  33. Im an LFC fan and came by this site by accident from newsnow.com. First I want to apologise for the foolish red on here who are very sad for wasting their effort slating you blues. I love lfc but it is wrong that liverpool council and all that seem to have forgotten you exist. i think a lot of reds forget that we grew out of your club and we would not exist without you. I wish everton every success….as long as we are still more successful 😉 Dont worry lads, if you can get your shit together and inovate like the author says then you will get a hell of a lot of respect, even from the red 2 thirds 😉 of Liverpool.

  34. The old chestnut of the 10 year waiting list… Such a convenient excuse for all you plastic, glory hunting so call “FANS” to sit in the pub and talk about YOUR team…

I believe you have the ratio all wrong guys, deffo more blues in Liverpool…

I bid you all goodnight and good luck for next season

  35. there are some good points made here, most made by some honest reds.but its obvious that the city council want to have a one club city its to hard work for them lazy fuckers to push two big clubs,so why not hedge your bets on the jammy bastards ,the thing is liverpool fans smugly fuckin no that god is a red he fuckin has TO BE AFTER WOT WE HAVE WITNESSED THE PAST FEW YEARS-ISTANBUL-BIRMINGHAM -ARSENAL TO NAME BUT A FEW TOTAL LUCKY RESULTS. thats why were so proud to be blue because everything we have achieved we have worked hard for -we arnt lucky we will admit that. and as for kirkby are u red twats saying that if you come from kirkby you arnt scouse -i tell u wot you lot stick were you are in frankly the scumiest part of the city were the kids run round the streets with there big brothers scruffy old fowler shirts on bricking you cars and when the yanks pull out we will have the last laf as u do a leeds -fuck u scum

  36. It would be so easy to slag and say yes there are two big clubs in the city Liverpool and Liverpool reserves, but as the story was written well I won’t. Liverpool FC have criminally neglected their merchandising opportunities during coco’s period as Chief Executive but one of the few good things the yanks have brought is an intent to merchandise our club better, we saw the opportunity and took it with both hands. From what I’ve been able to gather that whilst Liverpool FC were very pro-active in getting in on this Everton FC were not as pro-active. No doubt this will soon be put to bed and you can moan on about Clattenburg being a red and that he was on tour with Liverpool FC last summer whilst conviently forgeting that he went on tour with you lot in the summer of 2006.

  37. You make your own luck.

But you’d know that John. Interesting views on Liverpool though – nice to see you have pride in the city.

  38. typical gob shite kopites on here telling us we are a small club.

How many times have the RS won the Premier League…….. exactly.

The sooner you lot do a Leeds the better.

  39. Brian Labone could not have said a more correct statement.

    1 Everton = 20 Gobshites

  40. 41. Retard R/S

You are right. LFC are more well known globally. Worldwide everyone has heard of Hillsborough, Hysel, Istanbul, Alan Smith’s ambulance. No smoke without fire etc. etc.

  42. EVERTON SUCKS WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU CHATTIN U NORWEGIAN MIGRANT. YOU SAID ”smattering the TOWN with pictures of EFC will do nothing for our CITY.”
Have they not tought u english yet in the university ur in.
They need to start realising that Everton are also here and start putting up pictures. As your mighty graeme souness once said, everywhere you walk in liverpool theres a blue.

  43. John the blue u basically sound like a horrible, horrible manc in what you have just said there. People from kirkby are scouse, im from fazakerly but rest of me family from kirkby an theyre scouse.
