Engelaar would be a fantastic Carsley replacement
By Ryan G • Jun 10th, 2008 • Category: Fan Articles |Dutch midfielder Orlando Engelaar impressed many Evertonian’s (including me!) last night with his solid commanding display. He played a massive part in Holland’s 3-0 triumph over Italy and looked every bit at home on the big stage.
Engelaar is the club captain of Dutch side FC Twente, who last season finished runner’s up in the Eredivisie, thanks in no small part to his impressive performances. Van Basten has heeded this and view’s Engelaar as a player who has a big part to play in Holland’s ambitions for the tournament.
Engelaar, who is a monster at 6ft 6″ tall would add much needed height and presence to an Everton midfield. Everton have lacked ‘a big man’ in midfield for years with Everton manager David Moyes preferring smaller, more technically skilled players.
Engelaar showed his quick feet against the Italians and is despite his size a technically gifted player. He is solid defensively but also has an eye for a pass; this coupled with a good engine would mean he would be ideal fit for a hard working gifted Everton midfield.
Orlando is much like Carsley, in terms of the way he picks up the ball via an interception or tackle. His quality and ball retention ability then allows him to start a move off by passing to the flair players. Could he be another unsung hero for us?
Engelaar due to his stature and style of play would certainly add a different dimension to Everton’s midfield. His attributes would also surely be ready made for the hustle and bustle of the Premier League. I feel the 28 year old defensive midfielder would prove to be an ideal replacement for Lee Carlsey, who recently moved to relegated Birmingham City on a free transfer. Engelaar would surely also jump at the chance to play in the Premier League. Hope you were watching the game with intent Davey!!

Nice article. I thought he was outstanding against Italy last night.
Its height and presence we need. I think he could do a job.
Throughout the match, that’s all I could think of… Engelaar in our engine room. Good vision mate.
He would improve our team and the extra height will help get Baines back in the team as well.
Snag is having performed so well in such a big shop window many will after his signature.
Providing he isn’t picked up the potential is there to sign him, and we are ‘potentially’ likely to see more success in Europe that could boost his profile further.
NO SNAG IS HES ALREADY SIGNED FOR SCHALKE
A bit too old. Arda is only 21.
