Who are the Everton players at the World Cup and how are they performing?

In this article we will take a look at the Everton players representing their Nations at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Everton players, and almost certainly their fans, are much relieved to be taking a break from Premier League action for the upcoming weeks. Club football is currently suspended while the FIFA World Cup 2022 is being played.

The Blues are spending the World Cup break in 17th place in the Premier League, just one spot above the relegation zone. This is a time for the club to assess and reflect, but as most of Frank Lampard’s squad are available to train, a key time to improve on all aspects of the game. The blues have been reasonably good defensively in terms of goals conceded but concede far too many shots against each game. Offensively, general play and offensive set pieces will be high on the agenda although Lampard confirmed the January market is pivotal for this as he does not have the players “comfortable” for attacking football.

Four of Everton’s key players, however, are in Qatar to play for their countries.

While the FIFA World Cup provides peak entertainment for the spectators, it also gives them the chance to place wagers on their favorite teams to win games and ultimately take home the trophy. These wagers can be placed at reliable sites, with the availability of World Cup betting at maximumcasinos.com, where there are a lot of safe gambling sites for UK bettors. With all but one Premier League club having players at the World Cup, here are the Everton players competing on the big stage.

Jordan Pickford

Pickford has long been England’s first choice, so his selection for the World Cup comes as no surprise. Pickford will once more be in goal for England as they attempt to win their first World Cup since 1966. Due to their semi-final loss to Croatia, England was unable to advance to the World Cup finals in 2018. Pickford played every second of the 2018 competition, giving up 8 goals. He was also in goal in the 2020 Euros, as England reached the finals, but were defeated on penalties by Italy.

The English side carries a lot of promise in this tournament, with amazing talent and wonderful attacking options, as seen in their matchday one victory over Iran. Jordan Pickford performed well in England’s 6-2 victory over Iran. Although the keeper has little to do, he made a very good save from close range to deny Iran’s striker, and could do little about the goal.

Idrissa Gueye

Gueye has become one of Senegal’s important players. He will soon play in his 100th game for his national side, which will be a significant accomplishment. When Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties in March to earn a spot in the World Cup for the second time in a row, Idrissa Gueye was naturally selected to represent his country in Qatar. The Lions of Teranga will try to keep their positive attitude in the competition after their AFCON victory in early 2022, despite playing without Sadio Mane, their most important player.

Idrissa featured in Senegal’s narrow 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in their first game. He was neat and tidy in possession and helped break up play very effectively in a fixture which looked to be heading to a stalemate but for two very late goals from the Dutch side. Gueye seemed to have more license at international level to attack, and was even, much surprisingly, taking set pieces.

Conor Coady

Coady was one of the players called up by Southgate to represent his nation in Qatar, and he will be going to the World Cup with his teammate, Pickford. Coady was a part of the England squad for the 2020 Euros, but he did not make a single appearance in the tournament. So far, he has played in only 10 appearances for his nation before the World Cup. Coady has been one of the standout players for our struggling Everton this season, and will be lucky to make an appearance at the World Cup given the plethora of competition at centre back. However should England secure passage with a win against USA, which you imagine secures top spot in the group, he may be brought in for some minutes against Wales.

Amadou Onana

The 21-year-old midfielder was called up by Martinez to represent Belgium as they compete for the World Cup, after making his debut at the international level this year. Onanahas so far participated in just two international games for his country, but his versatility and standout performances have helped him secure a spot on the team.

Amadou came off the bench in Belgium’s very narrow 1-0 victory over Canada. Canada were arguably the better side in the game, finding plenty of opportunities against Belgium and their back five system. However, Everton’s young Belgian offered disciplined and accurate tackling from midfield, strong awareness and an ability to drive with the ball, although his role is clearly a conservative one for his national side.

There is plenty of room for him to grow and improve, and his experience at the World Cup will be huge — hopefully he can return to Everton with more confidence as it’s clear there is a lot more to come from him. Perhaps it’s time for his shackles to be taken off as sometimes it appears he is too cautious when we know he has those driving, powerful runs in his locker. In terms of his overall game, his heading, finishing, late runs and fitness are all key areas to work on.
