2-2 draw ?

Pardon my ignorance but can someone explain why last night a 2-2 draw would have taken both Croatia and Spain through?

Can't remember the points the teams were on therefore the reason why - but I heard about the bookmakers slashed the odds on that score happening which was interesting.

It was like the match was going to be fixed.

but thankfully it wasn't a repeat of Austria 0 West Germany 1 from the 1980s

basically if they're all tied on 5 points, then the games against ireland are ignored and they look at goal difference in the mini-league of 3 teams. So a 2-2 draw leaves all teams on 2 points, but Croatia and Spain with 3 goals scored and Italy with only 2 goals scored

The game was pretty dull so working out all the permutations made quite enjoyable for me! Hopefully none of that will be needed tonight and England will do things the straight-forward way

It was 0-0 for 88 minutes FAFS!! Then when spain scored he went into overdrive, told us for the cunteenth time what the permutations were, and forgot there was a game still on.

exactly, if it wasn't for being confused as to what was happening I'd have been bored senseless. Gutted that Spain got that winner cos England would have had a nice (nice as possible in a major tournament anyway) route to the final if, as expected, we come 2nd. Now its Spain-Portugal or Italy-Germany

That's NOT my point, nedward. It only needed explainin' the once, maybe twice in the first half, and the same in the second. Not every 5minutes, and then every 5seconds when a goal went in.

I'd expect a 7y.o. kid to understand it after having it explained to them, just the once.

Apparently they thought Dortmund was in Italy and kept calling Silva Villa

Very true. He'd just corrected himself with villa/silva - then not two seconds later (And I mean TWO seconds) he did the same thing again.

Oh, but he was a right feckin' gawp and that tw*t mark bright needs a good kickin' too
